Flower Diary - The rose: Week 6 to week 9

29 January 2015

The Flower Diary on Funnyhowflowersdothat.co.uk  will focus on roses from week 6 to week 9. Your customers can read all about this Queen of Flowers in the diary. Will you also be placing the rose on a pedestal  during these weeks?

What is the Flower Diary?
The Flower Diary 2015 features fifteen flowers sorted by seasonal  availability. The diary tells the  story of the specific flower, and offers inspiration and beautiful images. Consumers can find the diary on Funnyhowflowersdothat.co.uk and can share the content via social media.

The Rose, Queen of Flowers
The Queen of Flowers remains popular and is the world’s most traded flower. The numbers don’t lie: in Europe alone 9 billion roses are traded every year, and more than 1000 varieties of rose are offered for sale. The Dutch auction houses alone sell nearly 900 rose varieties.

Colours and shapes of the rose
The most commonly sold roses are red and white, but the flower also comes in yellow, pink, purple, orange and green, bicoloured or multi-coloured. They can have a light or strong scent depending on the cultivar. There is also a wide variety in terms of shape: from large to small, with a long or short stem, with a 'grass' heart or a quartered heart.

Care tips for consumers

Give your customers the following tips and they'll be able to enjoy their roses for between 5 and 20 days:

  • Trim the stems slightly diagonally. Use a sharp knife or scissors for this.
  • Remove the excess leaves so that there are no leaves in the water. Do not remove any thorns, since this will create wounds on the stem which are vulnerable to bacteria.
  • Place roses in a clean vase with clean water.
  • Ensure the right ambient temperature (maximum 20°C) and do not place roses in a draught, in direct sunlight, near a source of heat or beside a fruit bowl.  Fruit give off a ripening hormone called Ethylene, that cause flowers to age quicker.

How to make a rose bouquet

You can create an exceptionally beautiful and luxurious bouquet with shades of white, various pinks and a gold accent. The photograph shows floribunda roses, large-flowered roses and the unusual white rose 'Special Eye'. Amidst the white and pink shades, the Amaryllis Mocca provides an attractive colour effect. Finally dark pink carnations and a few branches of Eucalyptus sprayed gold provide an eye-catching accent in the bouquet.

Rose symbolism

The rose has many symbolic meanings:

  • Red: love and respect
  • White: true love, pure, dignity
  • Pink: happiness, gratitude, purity
  • Orange: longing, appreciation, sympathy
  • Yellow: intimate friendship, solidarity

The heart-shaped petals represent love and trust, and the thorns indicate that life and love is not always rosy.
